Memories in the Making: Swati’s Family Adventure in Copenhagen

There is something magical about the idea of family travel. The way it draws you closer, pulls you away from the monotony of life, and immerses you in experiences that become stories you will tell for years. For us, Copenhagen was the perfect mix of adventure and connection.

Travelling as a family of six - five adults and my spirited 6-year-old nephew - was not an easy task, but it was much-needed. Between work deadlines, school schedules, and the general hustle of life, we had been craving quality time together. Copenhagen promised us something unique: a city soaked in charm, yet calm enough for us to explore at our own pace.

Thanks to Thrillophilia, the trip came together seamlessly. From easy bookings to accommodating our payment delays, their team ensured that the only thing we had to focus on was enjoying our time. And so, on a bright June morning, we landed in the capital of Denmark to drench ourselves in the magic of Scandinavia.

A Gentle Introduction to Scandinavian Charm

Copenhagen drew us to its soft charm of a summer morning - the air was refreshing, and the streets were alive with extraordinary style. Our hotel, which was a lovely mix of minimalist Scandinavian design and warmth, felt like home immediately. My nephew was the first to race in and declare his love to the window seat.

“Why does everything look like it belongs in a storybook?” my mother thought as she admired the clean streets and pastel-coloured buildings from our window. The city felt like an invitation to unwind and explore.

That first evening, we wandered through the quiet neighbourhood streets and grabbed pastries from a nearby bakery. My nephew chose one filled with custard, and as soon as he took the first bite, his face lit up. “We should buy more of these!” he exclaimed, and his enthusiasm was contagious.

As the sun set, we knew one thing for sure - Copenhagen had already cast its spell.

Unscripted Wanderings in a Picture-Perfect City

The next day, we decided to keep things simple and explore at our own pace. Stroget became our playground for the morning. My nephew zigzagged between stores and admired the bright displays of toys and candies. On the other hand, my mother was attracted to the boutiques selling traditional Danish crafts.

A street musician playing jazz on a saxophone caught my father’s attention. He stood quietly and absorbed the music with a peaceful smile while my nephew danced with carefree abandon. It was one of those small and unscripted moments that feel like the essence of a perfect trip.

Lunch was a family affair at a cosy cafe serving smorrebrod. The adventurous nephew tried a fish topping but made a theatrical face after just one bite. “Maybe next time, I will stick to something safer,” he joked, earning laughs all around.

The highlight of the day was a visit to Tivoli Gardens. The charm of the amusement park was timeless, with its twinkling lights and vintage rides transporting us to a different era. My nephew’s favourite was a fantastic carousel, while my parents enjoyed the flower-filled gardens. As the day wound down, we realised that sometimes, the best itinerary is no itinerary at all.

Discovering Copenhagen’s Soul from the Water

The following day, we decided to experience Copenhagen from a different perspective - a canal tour. Starting from Nyhavn, we boarded a shiny boat that promised an hour of discovery.

Nyhavn’s colourful row houses were beautiful, and their reflections shimmering on the water like an artist’s painting. Holding a toy camera, my nephew announced, “I am going to capture everything!” as he snapped away with excitement.

As we glided along, the guide shared stories of the landmarks we passed. The majestic Amalienborg Palace, the sleek Opera House, and the striking Black Diamond that housed the Royal Library. My nephew was particularly intrigued by the Little Mermaid statue.

The canal tour was not just visually stunning, but it gave us a glimpse into the history and modern identity of Copenhagen.

Scandinavian Daydream of Crossing the Oresund Bridge

One of the most exciting parts of our trip was crossing the Oresund Bridge into Sweden for a day trip to Malmo and Lund. As we drove over the bridge, the sea stretched on either side. My father, usually a man of few words, could not help but marvel at the engineering genius behind it.

Malmo welcomed us with its perfect mix of history and modernity. We strolled through Lilla Torg and its cafes and boutique shops. In Lund, the medieval charm of the city left us spellbound. With its impressive stone facade and intricate interiors, the Lund Cathedral was a highlight.

My favourite part was the astronomical clock, which chimed with a playful tune at noon. Watching it, I thought about how travel has a way of awakening curiosity in everybody’s minds.

The day ended with a cosy fika. Sipping on aromatic brews and tasting cinnamon rolls, we all agreed that crossing the Oresund Bridge had been more than worth it.

Moments of Calm and Connection

Back in Copenhagen, we spent the day soaking in the quieter atmosphere of the city. A visit to Rosenborg Castle was a favourite for my parents, who loved the crown jewels and the beautiful gardens surrounding the historic site.

On the other hand, my nephew found joy in chasing butterflies as his laughter echoed through the hedges.

Later, we visited the National Museum of Denmark, where the little child of our group put on a Viking helmet and declared himself a “warrior of the seas.” The exhibits brought history to life and offered insights into Denmark’s past that fascinated all of us.

Our last evening of the trip was reserved for cosy dinners, where we indulged in Danish classics. My nephew developed a surprising fondness for rye bread. While my father, who rarely got away from familiar flavours, surprised us by trying a pickled herring dish - and enjoying it!

Copenhagen has offered us a perfect adventure, and Thrillophilia made it seamless with their planning and attention to detail. This trip to Copenhagen filled our hearts with joy, and the moments spent together would stay with us forever!
