Sri Lanka gave Amit Sachdeva the kind of solo trip where every few hours brought a completely different view. His journey moved through ancient temples, mountain towns, tea estates, waterfalls, colonial streets and the busy markets of Colombo.
Across seven days, Amit travelled through Kandy, Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Galle and Colombo, experiencing both the cultural heritage and natural beauty of the island.
Kandy Opened the Trip With Culture and Tradition
Amit's Sri Lankan journey brought him to Kandy, where history and culture were at the centre of his experience. At the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, he saw one of Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist sites and explored a temple complex closely connected to the country's religious heritage.
His visit to a Sri Lankan Spice Garden offered a more sensory experience. He explored the gardens, learned about local spices and their traditional uses, and got a closer look at ingredients that are an important part of Sri Lankan cuisine.
Amit also visited a Gem Gallery, where he could see Sri Lanka's famous gemstones and jewellery. The day ended with a Kandy Cultural Show, where traditional music and dance performances brought another side of the city's heritage to life.
Sigiriya Offered a Climb Worth Taking
The ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress gave Amit one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. Also known as Lion Rock, the enormous rock rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape.
Amit climbed towards the summit, passing ancient remains and the famous Sigiriya frescoes along the way. Reaching higher up opened up panoramic views of the surrounding greenery and countryside, making the climb worth the effort.
His day continued at the Dambulla Cave Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the caves, he saw Buddha statues and intricate paintings covering the interiors. The contrast between the enormous rock fortress at Sigiriya and the intimate cave temples at Dambulla made the day particularly varied.
The Hills Around Nuwara Eliya Felt Like Another Sri Lanka
The journey into Nuwara Eliya brought Amit into Sri Lanka's hill country. One of the first stops was Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, where he walked through landscaped gardens filled with tropical plants, flowering species and the distinctive Royal Palm Avenue.
The road towards Nuwara Eliya brought several memorable stops. At Ramboda Falls, Amit stopped to see the waterfall surrounded by the green hills of central Sri Lanka. He also visited a Hanuman Temple, connected to the Ramayana traditions associated with the region.
The tea country became another highlight. Amit visited a tea plantation and factory, walked through the lush tea gardens and saw how Ceylon tea moves from freshly picked leaves through the production process. He also got to enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea before continuing towards Nuwara Eliya. At Gregory Lake, the landscape changed again, with the calm waters surrounded by the hills that give the town its distinctive character.
The Train to Ella Became Part of the Experience
Amit's journey through the hill country continued towards Ella, beginning with a visit to Seetha Amman Temple. The temple is associated with the Ramayana and the story of Sita's captivity in Sri Lanka. Surrounded by greenery, it offered a quieter cultural experience before Amit continued towards Ella.
The journey itself became part of the experience when Amit boarded a train towards Ella. Sri Lanka's hill-country railway is known for its scenic landscapes, and the route gave him a chance to see the mountains and greenery from a completely different perspective.
He also passed the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, one of Ella's best-known landmarks. Set among dense greenery, the historic railway bridge is a striking example of colonial-era engineering and one of the most recognisable sights in the region.
Galle Brought Sri Lanka’s History Into Focus
Amit's next stop was Galle, where the atmosphere shifted from mountain landscapes to the coast and colonial history. Inside the Galle Fort, he explored streets surrounded by old fortifications and colonial-era architecture. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has a distinctive character, with historic buildings, narrow lanes and views towards the sea all contained within the fort walls.
He also visited the Galle National Museum, where he explored exhibits connected to the city's history and culture. At the Maritime Museum, Amit got another perspective on Galle's long relationship with the sea, trade and navigation. Together, these experiences gave him a closer look at the history of Sri Lanka's southern coast.
Colombo Was a Different Side of the Island
The final chapter of Amit's journey brought him to Colombo, where the pace became distinctly urban.
He visited Gangaramaya Temple, a colourful and eclectic Buddhist temple complex beside Beira Lake. He also saw the Lotus Tower, one of Colombo's most recognisable modern landmarks, and had the opportunity to take in the city from its elevated viewpoint.
His city tour took him through Colombo Fort, Pettah, Sea Street and Kayman's Gate. He also saw the Dutch Church of Wolvendaal, Kelaniya Buddhist Temple, Dewatagaha Mosque, Independence Memorial Hall, BMICH and the Colombo Museum.
The contrast was striking. In just a few days, Amit had gone from ancient temples and tea plantations to bustling markets and Colombo's modern skyline.
