When Ishita Saha started planning their trip to Bhutan with her husband, she already had a clear idea of what she was looking for. She wanted the comfort of a well-planned vacation, but she also wanted to challenge herself in ways she hadn't before.

"I wanted to do a luxury trip as well as something that challenges me," she shared.

Bhutan turned out to be the right destination for both. Over four days, the couple explored the country's capital, experienced its traditions, completed Ishita's first-ever mountain hike, and discovered that some of the best parts of travelling are the ones you never expect.

From the Border to Bhutan's Capital

Their journey began at Bagdogra Airport, where a private transfer pre-arranged by Thrillophilia was already waiting to take them towards Bhutan. After completing permit formalities at the immigration office in Phuentsholing, they continued the scenic drive to Thimphu, passing waterfalls and catching distant views of the Tala Dam along the way.

"Bhutan is not only just mountains," she said. "There are so many cultures, traditions and hiking that I was talking about. The Paro Tiger Monastery part and there is Thimphu, there is Punakha, there is so much to experience. So that's why I chose Bhutan."

Exploring Thimphu Before Heading to Paro

After breakfast the next morning, they spent time exploring Thimphu before continuing to Paro later in the day. The sightseeing introduced them to several sides of Bhutan's capital. Buddha Point overlooked the city from above, offering panoramic views of the valley, while the Memorial Chorten reflected the quieter rhythm of daily life as locals walked around it with prayer wheels in hand.

They also visited the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan's unique national animal, explored Tashichho Dzong, and experienced Bhutanese traditions at Simply Bhutan, where local customs and crafts brought the country's culture to life in a simple, engaging way. By afternoon, Thrillophilia had another private transfer ready for them that took them to Paro.

The change in scenery was noticeable since Thimphu felt like a bustling capital nestled in the mountains and Paro unfolded with its wide valleys, riverside views, and monasteries dotting the hillsides. The slower rhythm of the town made it the perfect place to unwind before the next day's hike to Tiger's Nest.

Climbing to Tiger's Nest Became the Highlight of the Journey

The third day began with a drive to the trailhead of Tiger's Nest Monastery, one of Bhutan's most iconic landmarks. For Ishita, however, the day was about more than reaching the monastery. It was also her first hiking experience. In her exact words, very excitedly she later mentioned, "So this was my first hike ever in my life, the Paro trek, and I absolutely loved it. Every bit of pain was worth it."

The climb took them through pine forests and steadily uphill towards the monastery, which clings dramatically to a cliff nearly 3,120 metres above sea level. The higher they climbed, the wider the valley stretched below them, making every pause an opportunity to appreciate the changing views. Reaching Tiger's Nest brought a sense of accomplishment that stayed with Ishita long after the hike ended.

But the surprises weren't over.

After returning from the trek, their guide, Chimmy, suggested trying a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, which is an experience that hadn't been part of their original plans. When asked about the experience, Ishita shared, "I have experienced the hot stone bath for the first time. After the hike, I got the hot stone bath, and it was something different, something new that I have tried. And our guide Chinni only suggested that we do that, and I absolutely loved that."

The warm bath, prepared using fire-heated river stones, turned out to be the perfect way to unwind after a long day on the trail. Looking back, Ishita had only kind words for the people who made the experience even more memorable.

"Our driver and our guide, Chimmy, they are like adorable."

Ending the Trip with a Relaxed Morning in Paro

Their last morning in Bhutan started with breakfast at the hotel before they headed out to see a few final sights around Paro. They visited the historic Paro Rinpung Dzong, admired its traditional Bhutanese architecture, and walked across the old wooden Nyamai Zam bridge, taking in the quiet views one last time.

Soon, it was time to begin the drive back towards New Jalpaiguri. The return journey felt different from when they had first arrived. The excitement of discovering a new country had given way to the satisfaction of leaving with memories they knew would stay with them. In just four days, they had explored Bhutan's culture, completed a memorable hike, and experienced a pace of travel that never felt rushed, making it difficult to say goodbye.

Every National Park Revealed a Different Side of Kenya

The adventure began in Amboseli National Park, where vast open plains stretched towards the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Their stay at Penety Amboseli Resort immediately immersed them in nature, with birds appearing around the property even before the first game drive had begun.

Inside the park, the wildlife seemed to appear effortlessly. Towering elephant herds crossed the plains, buffaloes grazed peacefully, and a pride of lions rested beneath the African sun. For Jesuran, who had imagined this moment since childhood, seeing these animals roaming freely in their natural habitat was every bit as rewarding as he had hoped.

Reflecting on Amboseli, he wrote,

"We saw the big three: elephant herds, a pride of lions and a herd of buffalo. There were a variety of birds, including the secretary bird, Kori bustard, black crake, etc."

The journey then shifted towards Kenya's famous Rift Valley lakes, where the experience changed completely. Instead of scanning the grasslands for predators, they found themselves surrounded by wetlands alive with birdlife. Jesuran described Lake Naivasha as a paradise for water birds.

"Lake Naivasha had mostly water birds, including the ugly Marabou Stork, African Fish Eagle, Hamerkop, gulls, etc."

Lake Nakuru added another unforgettable chapter. Alongside thousands of pelicans and graceful flamingos, the park introduced them to white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes, and several impressive birds of prey soaring overhead.

Masai Mara was Everything They Had Hoped to See

Everything throughout the safari seemed to build towards the Masai Mara.

Stretching across nearly 1,500 square kilometres of protected wilderness, the reserve felt endless. Every game drive carried the excitement of discovering something unexpected, and every turn across the savannah seemed to reveal another remarkable wildlife encounter.

Jesuran captured that feeling perfectly.

"Masai Mara is the place to visit. Every turn in the road had something to offer. And your visit to the Mara is never complete."

One evening, they quietly followed a lioness searching patiently for her next hunt. The following morning, they admired a magnificent cheetah standing proudly across the grasslands before another unforgettable moment finally arrived.

They admired a large pride of lions resting after a successful hunt, briefly followed a serval before it disappeared into the grasslands, watched vultures feeding alongside spotted hyenas, and spent time observing crocodiles and hippos along the famous Mara River.

"In the night, we were surprised to see a galago, the nocturnal bushbaby!"

In Gangtok, it appeared distant and almost dreamlike beyond the city skyline. Later, while travelling through the hills of Sikkim, the mountain occasionally emerged between clouds before disappearing once again behind the landscape. Every sighting felt brief, almost as if the Himalayas were revealing themselves a little at a time.

Things changed in Pelling.

Known for some of the finest mountain views in Sikkim, Pelling offered a much closer encounter with the world's third-highest peak. The views felt bigger, clearer, and somehow more dramatic than before. Whether visiting Khecheopalri Lake, exploring Pemayangtse Monastery, or simply travelling between attractions, Kanchenjunga seemed to dominate the horizon.

One morning, the peaks stood brilliantly clear against the sky. By afternoon, drifting clouds had completely transformed the landscape. It was fascinating how the same mountain could appear so different within a matter of hours.

The final and perhaps most memorable encounter came in Darjeeling. Like countless travellers before him, Rohit made the early morning journey to Tiger Hill. Before sunrise, the viewpoint was filled with visitors wrapped in jackets, waiting patiently for the first light of the day.

The darkness slowly lifted, and Kanchenjunga began to emerge from the horizon. As sunlight touched the snow-covered peaks, conversations faded, and cameras appeared almost instantly. If Sikkim introduced Rohit to monasteries, waterfalls, and mountain landscapes, Darjeeling added a completely different atmosphere to the journey.

The town moved at its own pace. Tea gardens stretched across the hillsides, toy train tracks curved through the landscape, and colonial-era buildings added character to the streets. Choosing the perfect destination for couples was not an easy task for Amey, a software engineer from New Delhi. He wanted to take her wife to a serene yet attractive place, where he and his partner could unwind and connect with nature. Later that evening, they strolled hand-in-hand along MG Marg. The fresh mountain air, the colourful lights, and the warm smiles of the locals instantly set the tone for the trip.

The couple spent hours window shopping, sipping on local tea, and simply enjoying the relaxed vibe of the town.

The next day was dedicated to exploring Gangtok’s many attractions, and Amey quickly realised that the city had much more to offer than just scenic views. Amey, usually one for words, was speechless. “We just stood there, soaking it all in,” he later said. “It felt like time had stopped, and it was just us and the mountains. No words could capture the moment.”

Later, the view seemed to shift as clouds moved across the peaks while changing the colours of the snow and the sky.

A Journey to the Sacred Tsomgo Lake

After exploring the natural and cultural treasures of the hill station, what attracted Amey and his wife the most was their trip to Tsomgo Lake. 

Since it is located at an altitude of 3,753 metres, the couple braved the chilly winds to admire the serene beauty of the glacial lake, which was surrounded by snow-covered peaks. 

Amey shared, “It was absolutely magical. The lake looked like something out of a fairytale, and we even saw Brahminy ducks swimming on the icy water.”

Not far from the lake was the Baba Mandir, a temple dedicated to an Indian soldier named Baba Harbhajan Singh. Amey and his wife were intrigued by the temple’s history and the stories that local people shared about the soldier's protective spirit.

Amey’s wife commented, “It is amazing how folklore and faith come together here. It is unlike anything we have ever experienced!”

Spiritual Escape to Pelling and Ravangla

As the journey continued, the couple left Gangtok and made their way to Pelling. But before reaching Pelling, they made a stop at Ravangla, where they visited the majestic Buddha Park and saw the 130-foot statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. 

Amey described the experience as “surreal” while standing in the shadow of the giant Buddha with the majestic mountains behind them.

There was a stillness in the air, almost like the world had paused just for them. It was the kind of peace one does not get in everyday life.

In Pelling, the couple had the chance to visit the sacred Khecheopalri Lake, also known as the wish-fulfilling lake. Amey admitted that even though they were not particularly superstitious, they both made a wish as they stood by the calm waters, surrounded by fluttering prayer flags.

Tea Gardens and Snow-Capped Peaks

After a few days in Sikkim, it was time for the final leg of their romantic trip - DARJEELING.

Early one morning, they visited Tiger Hill just before dawn. 

And, as soon as the sun rose and cast its glow on Mt. Kanchenjunga, Amey and his wife's eyes glistened in surprise. They felt absolutely speechless!

“We were freezing, but none of that mattered when we saw that sunrise”. The snow-capped peaks seemed to come alive in the morning light.

The couple then set out to explore its famous tea gardens. They visited the Batasia Loop which offered panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. 

The lush green tea plantations stretched as far as their eyes could see. Walking through the tea gardens was a sensory experience - the soft rustling of the leaves in the breeze and the cool and damp earth beneath the feet. 

As a tea lover, Amey’s wife leaned in close to the bushes while gently running her fingers along the glossy leaves. 

They sat on a small bench overlooking the fields and sipped their tea in silence. The tea was unlike anything they had ever tasted before — delicate, fragrant, with a hint of sweetness that lingered on their tongues.

When my wife and I stepped out of the airport on the morning of December 5, 2024, it was not the grandeur of the Eiffel Tower or the promise of the Louvre that struck me first. Malaysia trip reviews usually sound very activity-heavy. Island hopping. Cable cars. Packed itineraries where people wake up at 6 AM every day for sightseeing. Sidharth and Rashmi did not really want that kind of holiday. They mostly wanted a break where nobody would call them from work and where mornings could start late without guilt.

That was pretty much the mood of their Langkawi trip with Thrillophilia.

The planning part was easier than Sidharth expected, though he was slightly unsure in the beginning. On previous trips, updates had come through endless WhatsApp groups where important information somehow always disappeared between random messages and stickers. This time, most communication happened through the app itself. Flight details, updates, timings. Everything stayed in one place, which honestly reduced half the travel anxiety before the trip had even started.

Their overnight IndiGo flight from Mumbai landed in Langkawi after a long stretch of airport food, bad sleep, and repeatedly checking passports every twenty minutes for no reason. By the time they reached Kedah, both of them looked exhausted.

The funny thing is, they barely did anything “major” on the first day. No dramatic sightseeing. No race to attractions.

They checked in, showered, and went out walking because sitting indoors after a flight felt worse somehow. Rashmi kept stopping to click photos of random things, old signboards, coconut stalls, and colourful fishing boats. At one point, Sidharth joked that half the gallery would just be pictures of cats sleeping near cafés.

And honestly, he was right.

The beaches became their routine after that. Mornings stretched longer than usual there. Nobody seemed in a hurry to start the day. Even the cafés opened slowly. One place near the shore took nearly forty minutes to serve coffee because the owner was busy chatting with someone outside. Oddly enough, neither of them minded.

They had been walking near the coastline, looking for dinner, and accidentally ended up at this tiny seafood place with plastic chairs sinking slightly into the sand. Still, those small things stay in your head sometimes.
